Be prepared for winter conditions before you head out for a hike. Tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return. Make sure you have appropriate traction, layers, first aid kit, a charged cellphone, a map, water and food with you. Your goal isn’t to reach the summit, it’s to return to your car at the trailhead.
Winter gear can be an investment. If you don’t have your own or want to try some before you buy, check out Maine Gear Share in Brunswick. Local Lake Region libraries have adult and youth snowshoes available to borrow as well.
Is that ice safe? Venturing onto ice is always at your own risk, but when you measure the ice and inspect the condition you'll be much safer. Always check the color and thickness of ice. Remember: "Thick and blue, tried and true. Thin and crispy, way too risky." Stay Safe - If you don't know, don't go! Learn how to inspect ice at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's Winter Ice Safety Tips page.
