Film Screening and Q&A

Join us for a special screening of Clear Day Thunder: Rescuing the American Chestnut, an award-winning documentary that sheds light on the remarkable history and ongoing efforts to restore the American chestnut tree. The event, presented in partnership with Loon Echo Land Trust, Magic Lantern Theatre, 4-H Innovation Center, and The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF), will take place on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at the Magic Lantern Theatre in Bridgton. Showtime is 6:00 PM, and attendees are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes before to purchase concessions and settle into their seats.

Once towering over the eastern U.S. forests, the American chestnut tree numbered nearly four billion before being decimated by chestnut blight in the early 20th century. The tree, known for its size, rapid growth, and importance to both ecosystems and communities from Georgia to Maine, now faces a hopeful future thanks to the dedication of many passionate individuals.

Produced by The American Chestnut Foundation, Clear Day Thunder highlights the fascinating history of the American chestnut, its tragic loss, and the efforts of scientists, conservationists, and community members to bring it back. Featuring stories from common folk to prominent figures like Dolly Parton, President Jimmy Carter, and acclaimed writers Barbara Kingsolver and E.O. Wilson, the documentary captures the love for this iconic tree and the ongoing fight for its survival.

The film runs for 52 minutes and will be followed by an engaging Q&A session with members of the Maine Chapter of TACF, Loon Echo Land Trust, and The Magic Lantern Theatre and 4-H Innovation Center. Audience members will have the opportunity to learn more about local restoration efforts and how they can get involved.
